The hills tribes Miao people in China, continues a tradition for more than 3000 years which is the art of the embroidery. A multitude of techniques and designs are used, every tribe have his own style, passed on from mother to girl, generations after generations.
Being curious by nature, I wanted to go and visit these women and see by myself the origin of this beautiful embroidery work. It was a privilege for me to be able to meet these Miao women, in their home, in some small villages lost in the depths of mountains. I was so impressed to see them make this magnificent ancestral art in front of me using meticulous techniques of embroidery.
Most of the time, the Miao women join each other for embroidery work, in a house, in a sunny corner of street, or sometimes in small workshops.
The tradition wants that every girl makes by herself the embroidery which will decorate her wedding suit. She begin rather young (towards 6/8 years old) because it will take several working years. The girl will also have to embroider something secret, known only by herself, and which will be later revealed, after the birth of his first child.
In the province of Guizhou, where the diversity of Miao tribes is the biggest, I was able to observe alternately, the preparation of the cotton thread, the weaving by hand, the natural dye in indigo color. I could appreciate to observe the sharpness and
the precision of the gestures of these women that create these unique and colorful pieces of art.
I literally felt in love observing this amazing work, mixture of precision, creativity and patience. The Miao embroidery work is meaningful and the diversity of all these incredible designs reflects the expression of the heart and soul of each woman.
By marketing their embroidery, the Miao women manages to maintain their traditional lifestyle in their small isolated villages.
